Toxicological evaluation of Lafoensia pacari A. St.-Hil. (Lythraceae) stem bark extract: Acute and subchronic studies in mice BJPS
Ávila,Renato Ivan de; Ferreira,Camila Carvalho; Alvarenga,Cátia Belo Mattos; Vieira,Marcelo de Sousa; Cortez,Alane Pereira; Batista,Aline Carvalho; Costa,Elson Alves; Valadares,Marize Campos.
This study evaluated the safety of Lafoensia pacari A. St.-Hil. (Lythraceae) stem bark hydroalcoholic extract (LPE) through acute and subchronic toxicological assessments in mice. In the acute toxicity evaluation, a single 2000 mg/kg oral dose of LPE was administered to mice and clinical observations were conducted for 14 days. For subchronic toxicity, LPE doses (6.25-1000 mg/kg) were administered orally for 28 days and biochemical, hematological, histopathological analyses and renal and liver expression of Ki-67 were carried out. The acute oral toxicity evaluation of LPE showed no toxicity in mice and it was was classified as category 5 (LD50>2000-5000 mg/kg). In a repeated dose 28-day toxicity study, LPE (100-1000 mg/kg) led to an increase in...

Valuation of the Aroeira (Myracrodruon urundeuva Allemão): perspectives on conservation Acta Botanica
Monteiro,Julio Marcelino; Araújo,Elcida de Lima; Amorim,Elba Lúcia Cavalcanti; Albuquerque,Ulysses Paulino de.
Assigning an economic value to a given environmental asset has helped conservation proposals, and valuing these assets at levels comparable to market rates facilitates the establishment of environmental policies. Thus, this research aimed to assess the value of the species Myracrodruon urundeuva Allemão, using the method of contingent valuation to determine the maximum willingness to pay of frequent visitors to the Caruaru Fair, located in northeastern Brazil. Our results show that most interviewees agreed to participate in proposals to support species conservation, although the average willingness to pay (WTP) was relatively low compared to other surveys conducted in Brazil. However, a significant number of the interviewees had exceptionally low monthly...

Vitamin C and total phenols quantification in calli of native passion fruit induced by combinations of Picloram and Kinetin Ciência Rural
Artioli-Coelho,Fabiane Aparecida; Paiva,Renato; Silva,Luciano Coutinho; Barbosa,Sandro; Beijo,Luiz Alberto.
Brazil is one of the center of origin of passion fruit and has an important natural variability of the genus Passiflora. Several wild species of this genus are resistant to some pests and diseases and many are considered as medicinal. The aim of this research was to induce callus from in vitro Passiflora gibertiileaf explants for quantification of vitamin C and total phenols. Once the appropriate auxin/cytokine balance promotes callus formation and may optimize the production of secondary compounds and vitamins, calli were induced using a half-strength MS medium with a combination of the auxin Picloran (PIC) and the cytokine Kinetin (KIN). The vitamin C and total phenols were quantified by colorimetric methods from calli after different culture periods....

Water stress before harvest of pepper-rosmarin PAB
Alvarenga,Ivan Caldeira Almeida; Valadares,Rafael Vasconcelos; Martins,Ernane Ronie; Oliveira,Flávio Gonçalves; Figueiredo,Lourdes Silva de; Kobayashi,Mauro Koji.
The objective of this work was to assess the effect of different periods of water stress before harvest of pepper-rosmarin (Lippia sidoides) on the contents of essential oil and flavonoids. The experiment was carried out during 270 days of cultivation, with drainage lysimeters, in a completely randomized block design with five treatments: 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 days of water suppression before harvest, with four replicates. Fresh and dry matter yield, essential oil content, total flavonoids content, and water potential and temperature of leaves were determined. There was a decrease of approximately 50% in oil content and of 60% in total flavonoid content with the reduction of leaf water potential in 0.3 MPa. Essential oil is more sensitive to water stress than...

Yield and Composition of the Essential oil of Tetradenia riparia (Hochst) Codd (Lamiaceae) Cultivated Under Different Shading Levels Planta Daninha
ARAÚJO,L.L.N.; MELO,H.C.; PAULA,J.R.; ALVES,F.R.R.; PORTES,T.A..
ABSTRACT: Light has direct influence on growth and development by altering the morphophysiology of the plant and the content and composition of secondary metabolites. The present study aimed to evaluate the yield and composition of the essential oil of Tetradenia riparia cultivated under different shading levels. Plants were propagated by cuttings and cultivated either under full sunlight and in environment completely covered by black polyethylene sheeting to obtain shading levels of 30%, 50%, and 80%. Plants were grown under experimental conditions for 150 days. The essential oil was extracted from fresh leaves in triplicate for each treatment through steam distillation with a modified Clevenger apparatus. The components of the essential oil were...
